A live clinical case study

Why regulation & psychoeducation stop working, and what to do next

My clinical mistakes and lessons in a real case study

She could name every trigger. She understood her nervous system better than some of my supervisees. And every week she came back with the same thing.

Thursday 17 September 7.30pm BST 90 minutes, live on Zoom Live only — not recorded Register for the live session

It is a session about one client, one stuck point, and one question, the question that changed how I worked with clients who had done everything right and were still not getting better.

I am going to take you into the room with me. You will see what I was doing, why it made good clinical sense, what it achieved, and exactly where it stopped being able to help her.

You will leave with something you can use in your next session. Not a framework to study. A question to ask, and an understanding of why it matters.

How the 90 minutes will run

  1. I got stuck too

We open with the case, not the science. What was presenting, what I had tried, what the client already understood, what she could regulate and what kept coming back anyway.

  2. Where the treatment stalled

What I was doing, why it was clinically sound, what it genuinely achieved, and what it could not achieve. Regulation and psychoeducation did not fail her. We will look precisely at the edge of what they can do in this particular clinical task.

  3. What I could not see

Here we open up the word anxiety for this one client. What happened internally. What was sensed. What that sensation meant to her. What followed from that meaning, and what her nervous system was actually responding to. The evidence comes in to explain what you have just watched happen in the room.

  4. The question, and her answer

I ask it, and you hear what she said. Then you see what became visible because of her answer: information that had been in the room the whole time. I will teach you how to ask it and, just as importantly, what not to do with what comes back.

  5. Where the question ends

A question opens a door. It does not walk you through it. We will finish by naming honestly what the question gives you and what it leaves you holding.

The question gives you access to the information.

The clinical skill is knowing what to do with the information once you have it.

That distinction is the whole session. By the end of it you will be able to ask, and you will know what you are listening for.

What you will take away

Next Thursday, when that client walks back into your room, you will have somewhere different to go.

Who this is for

Qualified and pre-accreditation therapists, counsellors and psychotherapists working with anxiety and panic in one-to-one practice, particularly if you are carrying a case right now where both you and the client are tired and the client is starting to lose hope.

No prior training in the InCorr Method is needed. The session sits underneath whatever modality you already work in.
